The Rhythm of the Game: How Soccer and Music Fuel My Story
Music and soccer have always been my heartbeat—two seemingly different worlds that, for me, are inseparable. From the moment I sang my first song at 10 months old, in both English and Japanese, to the first time I scored a goal on the soccer pitch, I’ve been chasing the same thrill: the power of movement, rhythm, and connection.
Growing up on a U.S. Army base in Japan, my name, Amiko, was given to me by a Japanese elder who cherished me as a baby. That gift shaped my path, intertwining culture, music, and personal identity. Music and soccer weren’t just hobbies—they were languages I spoke fluently before I could even read or write. The flute in my hands taught me discipline and nuance, poetry taught me reflection, and soccer taught me strategy, teamwork, and perseverance.
The Alchemy of “Principle of Play”
My latest release, “Principle of Play,” is the purest distillation of this fusion. This wasn’t just about making a track; it was about translation. During the writing phase, I used soccer as my primary language, crafting lyrics that drew directly from the pitch’s DNA—the strategy, the positioning, and the tactical “principles” that govern the game.
Working alongside my producer, Carlos Battey, we took those technical foundations and wove them into a simmering love song. We looked at the field and saw desire; we looked at the tactics and saw the dance of a relationship. What emerged from our sessions at Rebel 11 Studios in the Miami area was nothing short of astonishing. The sun-filled, creative energy of the studio combined with a deep, rooted passion for the beautiful game to create a sound that feels both atmospheric and athletic.
The Audacity of the Vision: Versace on the Pitch
To capture the spirit of this release, I knew I had to do something no one had ever done before. I wanted to honor the vision of the great Gianni Versace while celebrating the heartbeat of Miami soccer.
In a bold, statuesque stunt, I stepped onto the small-sided practice fields in Doral wearing an iconic Versace pink gown—a deliberate nod to the signature pink of Inter Miami CF. Standing on those grass-roots fields, I channeled the classic Italian goddess vibe of Versace’s origins, posing like Minerva, the Roman Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare.
Holding a soccer ball like a trophy, those fields became the stage for “all of me.” It was audacious, it was a bit of a stunt, and it was entirely intentional. I wanted to grab the world’s attention for grassroots soccer and demonstrate how music can play a massive role in developing and inspiring young players.
From the Studio to the Stage
There is a powerful duality between the studio and the stage. The studio is my laboratory—a place of precision and discovery. But the stage? The stage is the stadium. It’s where the “Principle of Play” becomes a shared experience. While I loved the focus of the Miami sessions, I am fueling that energy into my live performance. I hope to be back on stage very soon to bring this new sound to life in the environment where it belongs: under the lights.
Looking Toward the Horizon
As I look toward the 2026 and 2027 FIFA World Cup competitions, my vision remains clear: to celebrate the beautiful game with a sound that matches its passion and intensity. Whether coaching on the field or performing on stage, I’m constantly reminded that the best moments happen when heart, skill, and rhythm align.
This is my story—the rhythm of the game, the melody of life, and the energy that keeps me pushing boundaries. And I promise, we’ve only just begun. ⚽🎶
